The snow arrives in early December, when Jim wakes to see the fat flakes swirling in the red grass beyond the house. It has gorgeous writing and fabulous characters but not a fast-moving plot. Yet the longer it lasts, the more the winter takes its toll. It is worth protecting, worth immortalizing through the written word. He does, where he then studies the law. After graduating from college, during the summer before entering law school, Jim returns to Nebraska to be with his grandparents. This is the first time they see him, having moved to Nebraska ten years earlier.

The narrative jumps 3 years into the future, and later, 16 years into the future. She opens a sailor's boardinghouse in Seattle, then makes her fortune in the Klondike gold rush, by feeding the gold miners, working her own claim and becoming a founder of the town of Dawson City in the Yukon.

It also reads like a Young Adult novel and I am gonna shelve it as such. I felt the old pull of the earth, the solemn magic that comes of those fields at nightfall. Shimerda asking that Jim teach both her daughters to read English.

Jim lives with his grandparents in the home they have built, helping as he can with chores to ease the burden on the others. Shimerda is saddened, reminded of his cozy village in Bohemia.

What's been especially interesting is reading about Willa Cather herself.
